Performing Artists I Want to See But Haven't Yet

As a concert-goer for over five decades, I've seen a wide array of legendary performers. From legends like The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Pink Floyd to 1980s rock royalty like Hall Oates and the Beastie Boys, my travels have led me to catch the vast majority of the artists I've always wanted to see. Unfortunately, a few notable acts are no longer with us, such as The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Prince, which has left an indelible void.

Artists I’ve Seen

Concerts have always been a highlight of my life. Whether it's The Who, The Clash, Led Zeppelin with Robert Plant, or even lesser-known artists like Todd Rundgren and Bad Brains, my appetite for live performances remains as strong as ever. Each artist has left a unique mark on my journey as a music lover.

Artists I'm Disappointed to Miss

While I've managed to catch most of my favorites, there are a few high-profile acts I deeply regret not seeing. The lack of tickets to The Beatles' final tours, for example, lingers as a regret. Similarly, I was unable to attend Prince's final performance, which I found particularly heartbreaking. And while the proceeds from ticket sales to these exceptional shows are often justified, the prices have skyrocketed in recent years, making it daunting to think about supporting some acts live.

Living Legends I Hope to See

Despite the passage of time, many living legends continue to tour and perform. Paul McCartney's current tour, for instance, is one opportunity I had earlier but missed. I was devastated to learn that John Lennon is no longer among us, yet a man like Bob Dylan still performs, making his performances a rare delight.

Artists in Memoriam

In the world of music, some artists leave an enduring legacy even in their absence. Some of these do not just pass away but also experience brutal tragedies. Among them are some of my favorite performers:

Amy Winehouse: Her timeless voice and poignant lyrics continue to resonate with fans worldwide. Aretha Franklin: Known as the Queen of Soul, her dynamic performances and powerful voice were always something to behold. Marvin Gaye: His soulful tracks are some of the most cherished in my collection. Jimi Hendrix: His unparalleled contributions to rock music cannot be overstated. Michael Jackson: His influence on music and dance transcends genres and has left an indelible mark on the world. Minnie Riperton: Her unique vocal style and soft yet powerful voice were unforgettable. Hilton Ruiz: Known for his complex vocal harmonies, his performances were always a gift to the auditory senses. Tito Puente and The Full Sylvers Band: Their contributions to Latin and jazz music are immeasurable. The Prime Years of DeBarge: Their lively and energetic performances remain a cherished memory. The Prime Years of Hall Oates: Their emotive and soulful songs are timeless.

Essential Live Music Experiences

While ticket prices can be prohibitive, some groups continue to capture hearts and minds. Pentatonix is one such group. Their performances are nothing short of magical, and their harmonies are a testament to their talent and dedication. Even though I've seen them perform and couldn't attend their show in Florida, the impact of their live performances lingers. Listening to them online often evokes a sense of loss, a feeling that only live music can truly fulfill.

Choosing to miss such sublime groups is a source of genuine sorrow. Despite the financial challenges, the chance to bring that joy to an even broader audience is a privilege not to be taken lightly. For every fan, the live music experience is synonymous with the spirit of the music itself.

As a composer and arranger of music, the absence of these legendary groups during their prime is both a curse and a blessing. It's a reminder of the finite nature of live performances but also a celebration of the enduring power of music to bring people together.
