Kitsch Treasures: From Vintage Platters to Handmade Gifts

Do you have things in your home or collection that are popularly considered as kitsch? These are often items that are visually appealing but are also subject to ridicule due to their unconventional or exaggerated nature. For me, my kitsch collection includes not just vintage ceramics and homemade art pieces, but also quirky gifts from my daughter. Let me share with you some of my favorite pieces:

Vintage Ceramic Dinnerware Platters

I have two beautiful vintage ceramic dinnerware platters with red glazed stripes, each created by different companies. These platters were found separately in thrift stores in towns that are hundreds of miles apart, adding a personal touch to my collection with a story of serendipity. Here are some pictures of my platters for you to admire.

Visual Arts: Painted Signage

My interest in visual arts is evident in two specific types of paintings that stand out to me:

Butcher House Paintings

The paintings on the facades of butcher houses are unfortunately absent in these photographs, but they are truly wonderful and surprising. These paintings often depict meat cattle animals and are a visual treat for adults and art enthusiasts.

Truck Bumper Paintings

Truck bumper paintings, on the other hand, are almost always accompanied by some form of obscenity. For example, one such painting states, 'On the day it rains, women, I want a leak upon my bed.' Despite the mature content, there is something deeply amusing about these artworks.

Personal Kitsch: Homemade Art

While I may not have a lot of commercial kitsch in my environment, one of my favorite pieces was given to me by an elderly woman I was visiting. She had a uniquely designed lamp that was completely handmade, except for the center column, which was fashioned from Mexican apple juice cans cut into various shapes and attached to form a crown. It’s a marvelously kitschy piece that I love dearly.

And let’s not forget the kitsch that comes from our daughter. My wife and I treasure the handmade gifts our daughter has given us. These pieces add a personal touch to our collection and make each item even more special.

So, what kitsch treasures do you have in your collection? Feel free to share your stories and pictures in the comments below!
