The Tranquil Escape: Exploring the Transformative Power of a Secret Garden

Within the bustling confines of everyday life, a secret garden can serve as a sanctuary where one can find respite from the world. My own secret garden is nestled at the rear of our home, sunken about 5-6 feet below ground level, creating a private retreat that offers both comfort and tranquility. This serene space, complete with a garden bench, pond, and waterfall, can be a valuable tool for mental health and overall well-being.

Creating the Perfect Retreat

The rear of my garden space is unique in that it is sunken below the rest of the property. The low-lying area was a perfect opportunity to create a separate space that feels almost like a hidden oasis. I installed the garden bench facing due west, allowing me to bask in the warm rays of the afternoon and evening sun, providing a perfect spot for relaxation and reflection.

On the steps leading to the pond, I built a small pond complete with a waterfall, which I have adorned with a weeping willow, water lilies, and various Primulas. The presence of these plants and the soothing sound of the water contribute to a tranquil atmosphere, often attracting birds to the area, making it a delightful spot to sit and observe nature.

Though my neighbors are not avid gardeners, this secluded space allows me to enjoy my green space in complete privacy. It's a place where I can sit, relax, and enjoy the beauty of nature without any interruption.

A Secret Tool for Mental Health

My daughter once struggled with sleep, and to help her, I suggested she imagine a secret garden. I would guide her through a series of questions, leading her to imagine standing outside a gate, exploring the path, and ultimately sitting on a bench. This imagery was a soothing way to calm her mind and help her drift off to sleep. The technique proved to be effective, and I've since found it to be a valuable tool for my own mental health.

I've used this technique to help manage various issues such as anger, loneliness, and bereavement. For example, when I felt overwhelmed by anger, I visualized myself walking into a theatre and my husband sitting alone on an empty stage. This visualization allowed me to address my feelings in a more detached and contemplative manner, leading to a reduction in my anger and a sense of peace.

The technique is not just for kids—it can be a powerful tool for adults as well. Imagining oneself in a peaceful scene can serve as a form of mindfulness and can help divert the mind from negative thoughts and emotions.

The Deserted Secret Garden

Though I cherish the time spent in my secret garden, it has been a while since I've had the energy to tend to it properly. Between taking care of my children and my busy work schedule, I have not had the time to keep the plants thriving. What remains is a mix of memories and a few domesticated plants, now partially hidden under a thick blanket of grass.

The garden, once a thriving oasis, has now become a hidden space under the grass, serving as a reminder of the time I used to spend nurturing it. The thought of what still thrives in the secret garden gives me a sense of nostalgia, and I wonder what it would take to rekindle the memory and spirit of this tranquil space.

In conclusion, a secret garden can be a powerful tool for mental health, offering a retreat from the stresses of daily life. Whether it's a sunken garden or a hidden corner in a larger space, such a garden can provide a peaceful environment for reflection and relaxation. I encourage everyone to take a moment to create or rediscover their own secret garden and see the transformative effect it can have on their well-being.
