My pet dog Giggio was an excellent example of a loyal companion and a true comforter. Whenever I was feeling down or sick, he was always by my side, showing great empathy and care.

Whenever I would cry, Giggio would instantly lay down beside me, gently licking away my tears. If I was too unwell to get out of bed, he would stay by my side the entire day, waiting patiently for me to feel better before he left. One of the sweetest moments I experienced with him was when he refused to take his medication. When I was concerned about him, Giggio swallowed the pill and promptly returned to lick my face, giving me reassurance.

One of the most heart-wrenching moments occurred when my youngest son was frequently plagued by nightmares. After comforting him and ensuring he was all right, my male German Shepherd, Shep, stayed behind to keep guard. He would rest his head on my son's chest, offering a silent reassurance that everything was fine.

Every night for a week or so, Shep would greet my son in his room, providing a constant presence that lessened the night terrors. Eventually, Shep would join my son in his nightly bedtime routine, making sure he was safe until I arrived to check on them. My son never faced another episode of night terrors.

Love that Dies Hard: A Shih-Tzu Cross and Lasting Comfort

My relationship with my pet came to an unexpected end when I was betrayed by my dying husband and his daughters. On the night I was left heartbroken with painkillers in my hands, my little Shih-Tzu-Poodle cross Jackson (Or as I call him, my little man) was already by my side.

He plopped on my bed, placing his paw on my hand and looking me in the eyes, sitting in silence. This act of comfort took place 3 years ago, and even though Jackson passed away in September last year, the memory of his warmth and support stays with me to this day.
