The Reality of Undercover Cops: Do They Have to Reveal Their Badge Numbers?

Why is there such confusion around undercover cops? Many people believe that undercover officers must reveal their badge numbers upon request. This article aims to clarify the facts and shed light on the true nature of undercover operations.

Undercover Policies Vary by Department

The obligation of an undercover cop to reveal their badge number depends significantly on the department's policies, as well as state laws. While New Mexico State law mandates that badge numbers be revealed, policies can differ across various jurisdictions.

Realistic Representation of Undercover Operations

Distinguishing between undercover cops in popular media and real-life operations is crucial. In actual undercover assignments, experienced police officers typically do not carry their police ID or badge. Instead, they may carry a gun, which is usually taped to their leg rather than in a holster.

My personal assignment involved being undercover in a town several hours away from my home base. I received a false ID and a motorcycle from an earlier case as evidence, which I used instead of a personal vehicle or a police department car. This operation was kept confidential, and only key figures such as the Detective Sergeant, Captain, and Police Chief were aware of my undercover role.

Details of My Undercover Operation

I did not make contact with my regular police force or the local police department I was covering. Two detectives in the town I was under cover informed me weekly and provided briefings about my progress.

Revealing my true identity as a police officer was not an option under any circumstances. My role involved lying to gain access and gather information on organized crime operations. These strategies were essential for building trust and uncovering illegal activities.

The Conclusion of the Operation

The undercover operation concluded when the detectives obtained arrest warrants based on the evidence I provided. The actual arrests were carried out by the detectives and uniformed officers. I, myself, was nowhere near the scene of the arrests, ensuring that my safety remained a priority.

During the trials, I testified, and my testimony carried significant weight. Although at first, my appearance and haircut led to disbelief, the strength of my evidence eventually led to convictions.

The security measures taken, especially at the courthouse, ensured my safety. However, there was still the threat of retribution. Yet, despite these risks, I continued to live my life, blending in with the community to avoid being targeted.

Undercover operations involve a strategic blend of deception and dedication to the law, often requiring a high level of personal sacrifice and confidentiality.
