The Pursuit of Liberty: A Global Perspective on the U.S. Constitution

It is an indisputable fact that America's Constitution, through the 5th and 14th Amendments, provides extensive freedom, unless one is deprived of liberty through due process following a conviction and sentence for a crime. However, this premise brings forth many questions regarding the true extent of liberty in the United States, particularly considering the historical context of its founding.

America: A Nation Founded on Slavery

The rhetoric surrounding the founding of the United States often overlooks a critical fact: the country was established as a slave-owning nation. Fully one-fifth of the population in 1776 consisted of slaves. The consequences of this foundational injustice continue to echo through history, most recently illustrated by the Black Lives Matter (BLM) campaign. How can it be said that individuals enjoy the most liberty when the very entities charged with their protection are statistically more likely to shoot them due to their skin color?

A Personal Global Journey

During my 24 years of military service, I traveled extensively across the globe. A core tenet of my personal philosophy was to venture beyond military bases to experience and interact with foreign cultures. What I discovered was a universal diversity in every nation, regardless of its origin. Whether discussing Egyptians, Japanese, or Germans, individuals across the globe demanded the abolition of gun control laws to enable them to live as free adults. Conversely, others argued for the restriction of gun ownership, mirroring the multi-faceted debates found in the United States.

This diversity was evident not only in this particular topic but across the board. I was given specific advice to avoid discussions on politics and religion, especially in Muslim areas. While this advice may be sound in certain circumstances, it often paints Muslims in an unfavorable light. During a visit to an art gallery in one country, a local gentleman observed, “The world admires America and its Constitution.” This conversation evolved into a detailed analysis of the document's origins and significance. The gallery staff members, in their own country, would face severe penalties for exercising similar rights.

Liberty vs. Security: A Contingent Balance

While the U.S. Constitution provides the most extensive freedom available anywhere, there have been significant compromises for security. As one gentleman reminded me, “Do not remove parts of a house of cards and expect it to remain standing.” Despite this, many political campaigns seek to dismantle fundamental rights, a call that is misguided and ill-informed.

Even with these challenges, we have the most freedom available anywhere. Unfortunately, the appreciation for this freedom is often lacking. The opinions of those trapped at the bottom of a pit are uniform, but by pulling oneself out, one can glimpse a new world. It is essential to fight for and cherish our freedoms, as they are a cornerstone of the American dream. Let us acknowledge and embrace the liberties we have and work towards a future where they can be fully realized.

Conclusion: Liberty, as conferred by the U.S. Constitution, is a precious and fragile gift. It is essential to recognize the historical roots of our nation, understand the universal diversity of global opinion, and continually strive to protect and enhance these freedoms. By doing so, we can ensure that the pursuit of liberty remains a driving force for individuals and societies worldwide.
