The Path to True Siddhis: Attaining the Supreme Perfection through Bhakti Yoga

The pursuit of siddhis or mystic perfections is an ancient tradition in Yoga and Bhakti practices. In the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam, it is emphasized that these perfections can be obtained through various means, including birth, herbs, austerities, and mantras. However, the ultimate perfection lies not in the attainment of these external powers but in the spiritual journey towards Krishna, the ultimate goal of all life.

Means to Attain Siddhis

There are various means to attain siddhis, as mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam:

Birth-based Siddhis: Birds can fly, and fish can swim due to their birth in nature. Similarly, certain siddhis can be attained by being born in the siddhaloka (a spiritual realm). Medicinal Herbs: Consuming certain herbs can bestow certain siddhis. Mantras: The power of mantras can also grant specific siddhis. Austerity (Tapa): Performing tapasya (austerities) can bestow siddhis.

Eight Primary Siddhis (Ashta Siddhis)

The eight primary siddhis (ashta siddhis) are:

Divinity (Deva siddhi): The ability to act like a God. Forgetfulness of the body (Yati siddhi): The power to forget one's bodily constitution. Having omniscience (Manomattatva siddhi): The power to see everything. Supernatural powers (Vidnyati siddhi): The ability to know anything. Overpowering the death principle (Amrtatva siddhi): Protection from aging and death. Tridhatu siddhi: The power to dive into the external and internal pores of bodies. Cure of all diseases (Prakirtitva siddhi): The power to cure any incurable disease. Immortality (Amrita siddhi): The ability to live forever.

Negative Aspects of Siddhis

According to the Srimad Bhagavatam, siddhis are not true means to spiritual perfection for a yogi. The Bhagavad Gita also states that:

“Whatever mystic perfections can be achieved by good birth, herbs, austerities, and mantras can all be achieved by devotional service to Me. Indeed, one cannot achieve the actual perfection of yoga by any other means.” - Bhagavad Gita 11.15.34

The interference of siddhis can lead one away from the ultimate goal of yoga, which is to attain the lotus feet of Krishna (Sri Krishna).

The Supreme Siddhi: Krishna Prema

The ultimate siddhi is to attain the shelter at the lotus feet of Krishna, which is also the perfection of yoga ($Yoga-svarupa-siddhi$). In today’s age, the practical way to achieve this perfection is through Bhakti Yoga, which involves chanting the holy names of Krishna. The ultimate perfection is achieved through chanting the Hare Krishna mahamrta:

“Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare

Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare”

As mentioned in the Srimad Bhagavatam:

In Kali-yuga, one can easily and quickly achieve the results of meditation, sacrifices, and service performed in previous ages simply by chanting the Hare Krishna mahamrta.” - Srimad Bhagavatam 12.3.52

Chanting the holy names of Krishna is the simplest and most effective way to seek the shelter of Krishna’s lotus feet and achieve the ultimate perfection of yoga.

Conclusion

Chanting the holy names of Krishna not only simplifies the spiritual journey but also bestows the ultimate perfection of yoga. For those who seek true siddhis, the path of Bhakti Yoga and the chanting of the Hare Krishna mahamrta is the way to attain spiritual perfection, as verified by ancient scriptures.
