In the field of landscape architecture, the integration of both functionality and aesthetics is crucial. Case Study: A Meditation Platform Design

One such example of the interaction between functional requirements and aesthetic considerations is the design of a meditation platform. I was tasked with designing a platform in a 110 foot right triangle against a fence and neighboring buildings. The original space was paved with bricks, making it inhospitable and hot. The clients, both over 6 feet tall and with tall children, provided inspiration from Japanese teahouse pictures. Initially, the design was accepted, but subsequent feedback from my boss emphasized the need to adjust the height to make it more functional and proportional.

The boss wanted the design to be too low, requiring occupants to stoop in order to enter the meditation shed. I argued against this, maintaining that the design had already been approved and that lowering it by 2 to 3 feet would be a significant alteration of the original proportions. Moreover, reducing the height would not align with the clients' requests and would fail to integrate the platform seamlessly with the background buildings. The cross beams over the opening were strategically placed at 80 inches, the same height as any standard door, ensuring a harmonious relationship with the overall design.

Finding the right balance between function and aesthetics is essential in landscape architecture. By considering both the practical and aesthetic aspects, designers can create spaces that are not only functional but also visually appealing.
