The Cartoonists of 2018: A Catalog of Talent

Black and white illustrations, vibrant colors, and the humorous or poignant punchlines: cartoonists bring joy, clarity, and a bit of social commentary to our daily lives. Each day, thousands of these creative illustrations are produced, allowing us to see a slice of the world through the eyes of those who choose to depict it in a humorous or satirical manner. One might ask, 'Who is your favorite cartoonist from 2018?' Yet, it is a question that, like most matters related to taste, is highly subjective.

Subjectivity in Art Appreciation

Opinion-driven topics such as favorite cartoonists are often decided on impulse or current popularity. If we were to ask this same question another day, the answer might be entirely different. My current project, a collection of gag cartoons, has led me to review and analyze over 2,000 illustrations from 2018. While the cartoons from this time provided many chuckles, they did not include any standout talent that I would happily display on my refrigerator. The last great classic cartoon that remains a cherished piece was by the talent of Robert Leighton, a name that still resonates with many fans of the medium.

Exploring the Market for Cartoonists

The market for cartoonists is ever-evolving, with a variety of styles and subjects explored. From political satire to social commentary, the art of the cartoonist has the power to capture the zeitgeist of the times. In 2018, we saw a diverse range of cartoonists pushing the boundaries of what this art form can achieve. Some of the most notable cartoonists from this year, while not necessarily my personal favorite, are still worthy of recognition and appreciation.

2018 Cartoonist Candidates

There is no denying the talent and creativity of several cartoonists who made 2018 stand out. Here are a few of the cartoonists who left a lasting impression in 2018:

Max Pinzari: Known for his poignant depictions of societal issues, Max Pinzari’s work provided insightful commentary on political and social matters. Leighann Groulx: With her unique style, Leighann Groulx turned everyday objects and situations into relatable and humorous narratives that resonated with a wide audience. Michelle Cuffe: Michelle Cuffe's cartoons tackled a variety of topics with a sharp wit, making them a hit among both critics and readers alike.

Each of these cartoonists brought their own unique spin to the medium, offering a fresh perspective on the world around us. While none of them rose to the top in my collection, they all contributed meaningfully to the artform and deserve recognition.

Conclusion: The Role of Individual Taste

Choosing a favorite cartoonist is a deeply personal decision. It is influenced by individual taste, cultural context, and the immediate impact of the artwork. My current favorite cartoonists, while varied in style, reflect the diversity and richness of the global cartooning community. It is worth remembering that every artist has a unique voice and vision, and their work can be cherished and appreciated in its own right.

Final Thoughts

As I continue to compile my collection of gag cartoons, I remain in awe of the talent and creativity of the cartooning community. The year 2018 showcased a multitude of exceptional cartoonists who brought joy, laughter, and social commentary to our lives. While it is impossible to pinpoint a single favorite, the diversity and quality of the work in 2018 certainly make it a remarkable year in the history of cartooning.
