Reflections on the Dizzying Reality of Postmodernism in Metamodernity

Metamodernity, much like a kaleidoscope, shatters our perception of time and thought, creating a patterned chaos that defies comprehension. Just as one might navigate a labyrinth with a flashlight that changes its beam, such an experience leaves one feeling disoriented and longing for the simpler forms of the past. Despite its ambitious attempt to transcend the constraints of modernity and postmodernity, metamodernity remains a fascinating yet often dizzying endeavor.

The Myths Surrounding Postmodernism

The concept of postmodernism is shrouded in illusion, much like a sorcerer’s illusion, misleading two distinct groups of individuals: right-wingers and academics. For right-wingers, postmodernism is perceived as a political movement that secretly underlies every social structure they oppose. Meanwhile, for academics, who delve into academic practices, postmodernism is given far greater importance than it holds in society at large.

My Personal Journey with Postmodernism

My exploration of postmodernism began in the early 2000s, a time when America faced its culture wars. To me, a Boomer generation individual, there seemed to be an insidious sickness, something pervasive that resonated deeply within our societal fabric. The revelation came when I delved into the academic discourse on postmodernism. The more I read, the more I was struck by the horror of the concepts I encountered. It was as if I was trying to awake from a terrible nightmare, as poet and writer James Joyce once put it: “Postmodernism is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake.”

An Examination of Postmodernism

Postmodernism, in my own words, is a sick and disturbing myth-ritual system. It is the myth of no myth. The pre-modern system, with its religious base, had its advantages and disadvantages. Similarly, the modern system, built on scientific principles, had its merits and drawbacks. However, postmodernism is purely destructive, smashing the idols of the two previous mythologies without offering any meaningful replacement. It is a nihilistic, anarchist, and decadent movement that leaves one wondering if recovery is even possible.

The Illusion of Cuisine

In the 1970s, as society enjoyed unprecedented affluence and success, a certain type of liberal criticized the society they lived in as corrupt and akin to a patient in the final stages of cancer. They believed that postmodernism was the necessary chemotherapy, a harsh but potentially curative treatment. Today, some of these liberals hold the smug belief that without postmodernism, there would be no positive social gains. However, this is a misplaced conviction, a game of conning others by perpetuating an illusion of truth and value relative to their own beliefs.

The Purpose of Postmodernism

Postmodernism is not about engaging in reasonable dialogue, negotiation, or compromise. Instead, it is a system that leverages the relativity of truth and values to attack opponents. Under this mindset, it is power that reigns supreme, not reason or mutual understanding. This was perhaps most starkly exemplified by the presidency of Donald Trump, who was described as the first postmodern president, though I sincerely hope it remains the last.

Conclusion

Metamodernity and postmodernism continue to challenge our understanding of reality, time, and thought. While the path ahead may seem daunting, it is essential to maintain a critical and discerning perspective, wary of the illusions that postmodernism seeks to perpetuate. As we navigate this complex landscape, let us strive for clarity and meaningful dialogue, and seek to understand the underlying principles that shape our world.
