Is There a Name for Current Contemporary Art?

Art created after 1964 is collectively known as contemporary art. This broad category encompasses numerous genres, including pop art, neo-expressionist art, and performance art. While some critics may disapprove of this artistic movement, its supporters and practitioners argue that contemporary art reflects the culture it arises from.

Contemporary art is constantly evolving, and we may soon need to invent new terms to describe its latest forms. As culture and society change, so too does the art that reflects and shapes them.

How Computers Have Transformed Our Perception of Art

During my 40-year career as a professional commercial and custom sign and constructs artist, there was a distinct skill set and talent involved in creating high-quality designs. Here’s an example of a professional custom sign:

Glue chipped glass, pinstriping, three different kinds of gold leaf, correct style, matching fonts, co-ordinated paint colors, well-balanced, good negative space, and an overall design that was the result of years of experience in various disciplines. An artist with such talent had to start with a thumbnail sketch, develop that into a working design, and create a step-by-step plan to execute the finished product with precision. High-quality signs not only held significant aesthetic value but also served as powerful sales tools.

In the early days, a well-crafted sign could pay for itself many times over, providing a return on investment over a lifespan of 35 to 50 years, with proper care.

Computers and the Decline of Artistry

Then came the digital age, with the entry of computers and vinyl cutters. Suddenly, anyone with the basic tools could swiftly generate designs, much to the dismay of traditional art practitioners. Here’s a story about the impact of these technological advancements:

Artistic talent and years of experience are no longer prerequisites. Instead of using a computer to generate templates, modern sign makers have reduced the essence of art to a simple, mechanical process. Quality and creativity have taken a backseat to the sheer volume of output that can be produced in a short time. Today, signs are often viewed as mere billboards with as much text as possible, and customers are increasingly taking on the role of designers.

The phrase, having a hammer doesn’t make one a contractor is often used to describe such situations. Just because someone has a tool, it doesn’t mean they are skilled or qualified to perform specific tasks. Similarly, having a computer does not automatically make someone an artist. This shift has led to a rise in visual pollution, where the landscape is cluttered with poorly executed signs and graphics that detract from the aesthetics of public spaces.
