Is Mendelssohn Really No One's Favorite Composer?

It is not accurate to say that Felix Mendelssohn is not someone's favorite composer, despite the impression that he might not be the most popular choice among all music enthusiasts. His works, including the Piano Concerto in E Minor, are celebrated for their beauty and complexity. Ultimately, musical preference is subjective, and while Mendelssohn may not be the top choice for everyone, he certainly has his share of admirers.

Mendelssohn's Musical Talents

I personally enjoyed his music, even though my teacher recommended not to play his pieces on the grounds of Hands for Chopin. Instead, I chose Chopin, and found it to my liking. Mendelssohn's music is melodic and not boring or repetitive, which I appreciate. My sibling brought up Mendelssohn alongside Schubert as a Romantic composer, but I, like many others, have little interest in Schubert. However, I found Mendelssohn's piano pieces to be very pleasing.

Mendelssohn is without a doubt a great musical genius, perhaps even more precocious than Mozart once was. At one point, he was on my list of the ten greatest composers, alongside figures such as Handel, Purcell, Haydn, and even lesser-known composers like Arriaga. One of the reasons for his enduring appeal is that he never wrote unappealing music. His piano and violin concertos are dazzling, and his symphonies and overtures are impressive. My favorite among his symphonies is the Scottish Symphony, particularly the slow movement, which he considers one of his best creations.

Mendelssohn's music reflects not just his talent as a composer but also his character. As a person, he was widely regarded as kind and noble. Had he lived longer, his music may have become even deeper and more profound, as has been the case with other great composers like Mozart and Schubert, who showed their best work in their later years.

I also enjoy his string symphonies, with the Italian Symphony being particularly joyous to listen to. While Mendelssohn is certainly among my favorites, other composers like Rachmaninoff, Bach, and others still hold a place of honor.
