How Did Vision Lift Thor’s Hammer and Prove His Worthiness?

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Vision, an artificial intelligence created from the Mind Stone, managed to lift Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). This event is a crucial moment that demonstrates Vision's worthiness to wield Mjolnir. However, there are several factors and qualities that contribute to why he was able to lift Mjolnir and prove his worthiness.

Why Was Vision Worthy?

Vision, being an artificial intelligence with a noble purpose, embodies various qualities that align with the idea of worthiness. He is selfless and dedicated to protecting humanity, which is likely why he can lift Mjolnir. In the MCU, the ability to lift Mjolnir is not just a physical ability, but a symbolic one that signifies a person's character and motives.

Vision’s Pure Heart

One of the key reasons why Vision can lift Mjolnir is because he has a pure heart. Unlike Ultron, Vision has no personal interests, vendettas, or prejudices. He makes it clear that the only side he takes is life itself. This purity of heart and lack of any form of selfishness or malice makes him an ideal candidate to lift Mjolnir.

The Opposite of Ultron

Another reason why Vision can lift Mjolnir is his stark opposition to Ultron. After becoming fully conscious and calming down, Vision states, “He is on the side of life.” Ultron, on the other hand, believes that most life, whether intentionally detrimental or not, must be wiped out, including humanity. Ultron’s self-idolatry also disqualifies him from being worthy. By standing in direct opposition to these traits, Vision exemplifies the qualities that make one worthy of lifting Mjolnir: defender of life, selflessness, and a rejection of consequentialism like Ultron’s.

Proving His Worthiness in Age of Ultron

Firstly, Vision was indeed worthy in “Age of Ultron.” During the scene where the Avengers were testing who could lift Mjolnir, Vision effortlessly picked it up, surprising everyone. Thor himself verified his worthiness at the end of the movie when he recognized Vision’s ability to lift Mjolnir as a sign of his worthiness.

Why couldn’t Vision Lift Mjolnir in Infinity War?

It is important to note that Vision could not lift Mjolnir in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) for a specific reason. Mjolnir was destroyed early in Thor: Ragnarok (2017) by Hela, well before Infinity War. At that time, Thor was wielding Stormbreaker, and Mjolnir didn't reappear until Avengers: Endgame (2019) when Thor retrieved it from the past. By then, Vision had already been "killed" in Avengers: Infinity War and was no longer in existence to lift Mjolnir.

Conclusion

Overall, Vision's ability to lift Mjolnir and prove his worthiness is primarily due to his pure heart, selflessness, and opposition to Ultron's character flaws. These qualities make him a perfect candidate to wield Mjolnir, which is why he can and did lift it in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
