Exploring Religious Beliefs: My Journey Through Christianity and Beyond
Introduction
Religion plays a crucial role in the lives of millions, providing solace, guidance, and a sense of community. For me, my Christian faith has been a vital part of my journey, and my denomination has evolved over the years. In this article, I'll share my experiences, beliefs, and reflections on the various denominations and churches I've been a part of, answering some of the common questions that often arise among Christians and those with similar faiths.
My Background in Scottish Presbyterianism
My religious journey began in the late 1970s when I was born into a Scottish Presbyterian church. This denomination had a profound impact on my childhood. Throughout my teenage years, I attended worship services with my family every Sunday at the local church. The Scottish Presbyterian church, with its rich tradition and strong theological foundation, provided a solid grounding in Christian faith and practice.
Methodist Church During Childhood
During my childhood on an Irish farm, our family had to walk to a nearby Methodist church. This was the only accessible option at the time, and it became a familiar destination for us. The Methodist church, with its emphasis on revival and personal faith, complemented the Presbyterian teachings I was exposed to in Scotland.
Adult Membership in WEC International
As an adult, I was accepted by an undenominational missionary organization, WEC International, and I worked for 52 years in Asia. The experience was formative and challenging, but deeply rewarding. It allowed me to serve the Lord in the global context and interact with diverse Christian traditions.
My Current Faith and Beliefs
For the past several decades, I have had the privilege of being part of a nondenominational church. While I’ve been labeled as a Latter-day Saint (Mormon) in some discussions, that term is not what I would use to describe myself. My core belief is that Jesus Christ is my Savior. My focus has always been on knowing Him as my personal Lord and in finding eternal life through Him.
The Importance of Personal Belief in Christianity
For me, the most significant aspect of faith is the individual relationship with Jesus Christ. My experience and beliefs are primarily shaped by the New Testament and the teachings of Christ. While denominational structures offer support and community, the core of my faith is my personal relationship with God and the salvation through Jesus.
Choosing a Church and Evaluation Criteria
When looking for a church, I evaluate several key factors. These include the quality of the pastoral leadership, the spiritual atmosphere, and the community’s adherence to scriptural teachings. Additionally, the size and location of the church play a role in facilitating regular attendance and active participation in church activities.
How We Worship and Our Community
Our worship services are centered around Bible study, prayer, and communion. We also have various small group gatherings and outreach programs to serve the community. The church I attend emphasizes the importance of both individual salvation and the care of the wider community.
A Profound Question for All Christians
One of the most important questions for Christians is: Why do you believe and follow Jesus? For me, it comes down to the transformative experience of knowing Him in an intimate, personal way. The gospel message of salvation and the hope it provides are central to my faith. This belief and trust in Jesus as my savior are the pillars of my spiritual life.
Further Thoughts
While denominations provide structure and community, the fundamental core of Christianity is the relationship with Jesus Christ. As the apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 1:10, 'Is the Christ divided?' This question challenges us to unify in our belief in the one Christ and to seek a deeper relationship with Him.
Closing with a reflection on faith
Ultimately, the journey of faith is a personal one, marked by individual experiences and growing understanding. Whether you're a Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, or part of a nondenominational church, the common thread is the shared belief in Jesus Christ. For me, it is a journey that continues to evolve and deepen, bringing a sense of purpose and direction to my life.
