Effortlessly Removing Stickers from Polished Brass: Techniques and Tips

Removing a stubborn sticker from polished brass can be a challenging task without causing damage to the surface. This guide will walk you through effective methods for gently removing stickers from polished brass without scratching the metal.

Materials Needed

hairdryer or heat gun plastic scraper or credit card rubbing alcohol or adhesive remover like Goo Gone soft cloths or paper towels mild dish soap water

Steps to Remove the Sticker

1. Heat the Sticker

To soften the adhesive, use a hairdryer or heat gun on a low setting. Hold it a few inches away from the surface and move it around to avoid overheating any one spot. This will help to heat the sticker without damaging the brass.

2. Peel Off the Sticker

Once the sticker is warm, attempt to peel it off using your fingers. If it doesn’t come off easily, use a plastic scraper or an old credit card to lift the edges. Be careful not to scratch the brass surface.

3. Apply Adhesive Remover

If any adhesive residue remains, apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol or adhesive remover to a soft cloth. Dab it onto the residue and let it sit for a minute to break down the adhesive.

4. Wipe the Area

Gently rub the area with the cloth until the adhesive is removed. Use a clean part of the cloth as needed.

5. Wash the Surface

Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water. Dampen a clean cloth with this solution and wipe the brass to remove any remaining adhesive remover.

6. Dry and Polish

Use a dry soft cloth to thoroughly dry the brass. If you desire, polish it with a brass polish to restore its shine.

Tips

Always test any adhesive remover on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn’t damage the finish. Avoid using metal scrapers or abrasive materials as they can scratch the surface. For particularly stubborn stickers, you may need to repeat the heating and adhesive removal process.

In my recent experience, I’ve found that alcohol, such as rubbing alcohol, works well for removing stickers and adhesive residue. However, I have discovered that Zippo lighter fluid—also known as Naptha, sold at Home Depot under the VMP Naptha brand—works even better. This chemical is the same as Zippo fluid but is often cheaper.

By following these steps, you should be able to remove the sticker effectively while keeping the polished brass surface intact and looking its best.
