Did Early Humans Moisturize Their Skin, and If So, How?
History of Skincare from Ancient Times
Throughout history, humans have sought ways to protect and enhance their skin. While modern skincare innovations like Botox, med spas, and countless anti-aging creams and serums are prevalent today, early humans undoubtedly faced challenges in maintaining their skin health. Due to their absence of chemical products and the lack of modern moisturizers, they turned to natural remedies and practices to keep their skin healthy—much like our current approaches to an ancient skincare journey.
Natural Moisturizers and Exfoliants
One of the most widely used skincare treatments in history was the mixture of fresh berries and milk, applied to the facial area. No matter the era, people have relied on natural ingredients to nourish their skin. The ancient Greeks, for instance, used olives and olive oil as both exfoliants and moisturizers. Similarly, honey, when mixed with milk and yogurt, provided anti-aging benefits. Apart from these, oils such as rose oil and jasmine oil were renowned for their skin-care properties and were frequently used by ancient queens and nobility.
While human skin secretes natural oils, especially in lower humidity conditions, early humans likely supplemented their moisture levels with oil-based applications. Olive oil, in particular, was a staple, not just for skin but also for its many medicinal uses. The olive tree, representing life and healing, was deeply symbolic in ancient cultures and used in various rituals and healing practices.
Practice and Lifestyle Around Moisturizing
Throughout many ancient civilizations, oil baths were common. These baths helped to increase the body's natural lubrication, both inside and out, and provided a hydrating effect. Women also utilized ubtans—natural face masks and scrubs that helped retain moisture. Alongside these practices, the consumption of hydrating foods such as tender coconuts, apples, and lassi is believed to have contributed to nourished skin. These foods contain high levels of antioxidants and other beneficial nutrients that promote skin health.
Another factor that likely contributed to better skin during ancient times might have been the lower levels of pollution and the potentially lesser impact of the sun compared to today. With less environmental stress, early humans faced fewer issues related to skin aging and damage.
While much is speculative without time-travel capabilities, these insights into ancient skincare routines can provide valuable lessons and inspiration for modern skincare practices. Embracing natural, holistic approaches to skincare can help us achieve and maintain healthy, glowing skin much like our ancestors did.
