What is Something That Parents Say Makes You Cringe?

When we think back to our childhood, some of the things our parents said can be quite cringe-worthy. These moments can range from overprotective instructions to outdated advice that reflect a time long gone. Let's explore some of these cringe-worthy parental comments that still linger in our memories.

1. Overprotective Advice

When I was fourteen, my mother once told me, If you get pregnant just keep the baby and I'll bring it up. I was shocked! With all my innocence, I replied, But Mum, I'm only fourteen, and I am not having any sex at all. She, however, continued, When you do have sex, if you get pregnant - And then with a serious tone, she said, Yes, but if the condom breaks, just keep the baby. I wouldn't mind bringing up a baby again. She didn't know the phrase WTF at the time, so I just growled-sighed at her in disbelief.

2. Fat-Shaming Family

At another point, a workmate once called my office to come quickly to see her child do a Big Girl Poo. It was a real dilemma. How do you decline a request when the person making it has just made you dinner and is your superior at work? It’s another cringe-worthy moment that still makes me cringe.

3. Fatty Food Pressure

A recent incident in a Wendy’s restaurant is particularly memorable. I was sitting next to a family with a six-year-old daughter who had already finished her meal. The family was overweight, and the mother told her, I don't care if you're not hungry anymore, eat your fries because I’m not throwing any food out.#34; The father added, Do as your mother says or we aren't leaving. It was a stark reminder of how some parents force-feed their children even at such an early age, just to not waste food. I couldn't finish my chicken nuggets, feeling guilty about the way the child was treated.

4. Dishonesty and Disappointment

There's also the old saying that Once you grow up, you'll see life isn't fun and games. This may be true, but it's disappointing when our childhood memories are colored with disappointment and frustration. One day, while my mom went to Walmart and asked for chicken balls, I couldn't help but think, Mom, that's not a real thing.

5. Trust Violation and Betrayal

A more recent and troubling incident involved a close friend. We had planned to meet for a catch-up in a pub. Upon arrival, my friend S mentioned he had a group of friends who hired an escort and took turns with her. He even went as far as saying he was part of a swinging group with his wife, which shocked and devastated me. Even after discussing the situation, I still felt betrayed and lost respect for him, especially after his last line about the escort being eager for him to walk her home and making advances on him. This is a story that will define a friendship I previously held in high regard.

These moments, while they make us cringe, are reminders of the growth and evolution we undergo from childhood to adulthood. It's important to remember the lessons these experiences teach us and to ensure we don't repeat the same mistakes in our parenting or relationships.
