Are You Skilled in Music or Just Choosing the Wrong Instrument?

When faced with the dilemma of whether you lack the necessary musical skills or if it is merely the instrument you've chosen, the first question you should ask yourself is: Am I having fun? Is this instrument fun for me, or do I look at it with noxious dread, dreading the moment it's time to pick up?

Reasons Behind Your Musical Journey

Did you start playing at the request or behest of someone else, or was it a true reflection of your passion? For instance, I frequently find myself playing the guitar - sometimes multiple times in a day - because it genuinely brings me joy. I enjoy the sound it produces, relish in learning new riffs and runs, and always seek out the tablature or chord changes for songs I like on the radio.

The Link Between Skills and Fun

Conversely, if you find yourself asking whether you are skilled in music, it likely means you are not. No instrument can make you a skilled musician; rather, a skilled musician makes the instrument sound as good as possible. Skilled musicians exude confidence in their abilities, whereas unskilled musicians remain perpetually hopeful but never achieve success. Even many skilled musicians struggle to make a living in the music industry, while unskilled musicians are less likely to find success unless they cater to genres that demand very little talent.

Understanding the Factors

The instrument itself may not be the primary issue, as some can require more initial effort. However, several attributes are significantly more important:

Physical Attributes

Having terrible eyesight meant I struggled with golf, while my height made professional basketball less feasible. Similarly, poor hearing or lack of flexibility can be disadvantages, but developing skill in these areas is often possible.

Finding an instrument that suits your body size can also be beneficial. Some people naturally possess excellent musical memory and can recall melodies easily, while others may need more training to develop this ability.

Mental Attributes

Maintaining a strong work ethic, perseverance, and the ability to seek help and advice are crucial for success. Many people can learn these attributes, as they are skills that can be developed over time.

Without the ability to persevere, practice, and repeat without giving up, success in music (and life in general) becomes exceedingly difficult. Being systematic, working steadily, and managing time efficiently are vital. Coping with information deficits, such as my aging mother's dementia, underscores the importance of established routines and habits.

Conclusion

It's not about the instrument you choose, but rather whether you are willing to develop the skills and mindset necessary to excel. If you find joy in the process and are dedicated to your craft, your journey in music will be far more rewarding, regardless of the instrument you play.
