Appreciating Effort Over Skill: A Guide for Aspiring Dancers
Dancing is not just about natural talent and perfect performance; it's a celebration of effort and self-expression. Whether you are a seasoned dancer or just starting out, it’s essential to appreciate the journey and progress of every dancer, including those who might not be as skilled but are trying their best. This article will explore the importance of recognizing effort over skill and provide tips on how to foster a supportive dance community.
The Intrinsic Value of Effort
It is natural for every dancer to hope for recognition and praise for their efforts. However, it's crucial to understand that not everyone will receive that validation, and it's more important to focus on your own journey and improvement. Struggling dancers should find kind and supportive partners who encourage their efforts rather than criticize their skills.
Dancing Explained
Dancing is a combination of various elements:
Counting and feeling rhythm is an innate ability. Some individuals naturally have a kink for music and movement, making them predisposed to dancing. Expressing oneself creatively and gracefully through the body is a unique form of self-expression. This aspect of dancing allows dancers to convey emotions and stories without words. Enjoying the movement to music is the joy that drives many dancers. It is a form of exercise and self-expression that can be deeply fulfilling. These three aspects form the foundation of any dance practice. If you possess any of these elements, you have a great start to your dance journey.
Appreciating the Strugglers
Those who are not perfect but still striving to improve have the greatest potential. Starting from the basics is crucial for achieving the best results. Enhancing skills from the beginning, whether it's feet position or another aspect, can lead to a solid foundation and better overall performance.
Considering the potential for improvement over time, those who start from these foundational steps have a higher rate of future success. Check out some amazing videos from these YouTube channels to inspire your journey:
TR FELLOWS TOP ALL ROUNDWhile it's understandable to wish for recognition, always focus on appreciating the effort rather than the skill. People who try the hardest are the most admirable. Hard work and determination are key to achieving potential, and skill levels may well surpass yours over time.
Personal Experience
For many, dance is a form of exercise that brings joy and expression. I have taken dance classes across various genres for years, although I was not naturally talented. Moving to music was the primary enjoyment I derived from dance. My lack of athletic abilities and enjoyment of competitive sports made dance my preferred form of exercise.
Respect and politeness are prevalent in the dance community, where less talented dancers can progress without interference, as long as they do not hinder others. There are occasionally disagreeable individuals, but instances of bullying or cruelty are rare and do not compare to the dynamics in youth sports teams. The key is to avoid enrolling in classes beyond your skill level, which can lead to frustration for other dancers waiting for permission to take more difficult classes.
Adult Beginner or "Open" classes are typically challenging enough for most dancers, and it's unnecessary for less capable dancers to attend Advanced classes. My goal was to be able to join any "Intermediate" class in NYC without being humiliated. By standing behind more talented dancers, I achieved my best and understood that even less skilled dancers can confidently join Advanced or Professional classes.
Overall, the dance community is generally kind and encouraging. The focus should always be on personal progress and appreciation of effort.
